I started my iCPL in Jan 2015. Pitch reader for mac. It is now 104Gb/8000 pics. In a years time I will be needing to upgrade my iCloud storage plan. So I am thinking I would like to make the existing one an ordinary Photos library, and start a new iCloud Photos Library. If I start a new library now and make it the iCPL, it will merge with the existing iCPL. I would like it to replace the existing one in iCloud.
I could do it (I think) by:- 1. Make the existing one non-iCPL and rename it. Create a new Photos lib and make it the iCloud system library. The new (empty) library will upload and merge with the old one in iCloud, so it will now contain all 8000 photos from the original lib.

Delete all 8000 photos in the new one. Start putting new photos in the now empty iCloud Photos library. Is there a better way? Am I making it too difficult? I can see what I described above taking long time to settle down across all devices, although I can avoid waiting the 30 days by deleting from the Recently Deleted folder. Then you will need to make sure all photos do download to your Mac before you copy your current library to your backup drive and start deleting from iCloud. Is there enough free storage on your Mac to do that? I also like to keep my iCloud library small.

My iCloud Library has only my favorite photos from many years, that I want on all my devices plus the newest photos that I am still working on. Because the iCloud Library needs to be the system Library, only the photos in the iCloud Library are available in the media browser for other applications, so I keep all photos there that I may want to use in other applications.

What I am doing to save bandwidth and upload time is to have two libraries: • One large library where I am keeping all photos that I want to keep - this is my photo archive. This library is on an external drive that is backed up by Time Machine and is currently still an Aperture Library. • A smaller iCloud Photo Library in my Pictures folder. I import new photos first to the iCloud library, delete all bad shots that do not need archiving, then I export the originals to the archive library. And then I start editing the photos in the iCloud Library and rigoriously deleting and keeping only the best photos. Are you using 'Optimize Mac Storage' on your Mac?
